It is not clear whether foul play was involved at this time.

Erica played collegiate golf at Arizona, was a two-time All-American and turned pro in 2004. She just recently competed in the Tres Marias Championship in Mexico where she tied for 44th.

“She was a very popular player and well-liked and we’re going to miss her,” David Higdon, LPGA spokesman said. “This is a very close-knit group of players and tour and we’re saddened by what happened.”

Statement from Erica Blasberg’s agent, Chase Callahan of REP 1 Sports Group:

“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Erica Blasberg. To most of the world, Erica was known as a professional golfer, but she was more than that. She was a loving daughter to her parents and a compassionate and loyal friend. Erica had a good heart, was extremely kind and very thankful for what she had in her life. She lived out her dream of playing professional golf on the highest level on the LPGA Tour, allowing her to help inspire others. We are proud of Erica for everything she accomplished. This is a painful loss, we feel it in our hearts and we will miss her. Erica would want those close to her to celebrate the life she lived. We ask that you keep Erica and her family in your prayers.”

Our hearts and prayers go out to Erica’s family, both immediate and her LPGA family. Rest in Peace, Erica!

Who Took the Common Out of Common Sense?

Why is it that in a sport dominated by a code of ethics, personal integrity and honesty we have to suffer the morons that can’t or choose to not use some measure of common sense while on the golf course? There are ‘Rules of Golf Etiquette’ for goodness sakes that when read make you go, Duh!!

Now don’t get me wrong. I totally believe in golf etiquette as I do in treating my fellow human beings with common courtesy but I don’t carry a book around that spells out what those common courtesies should be. I know there are plenty of self-absorbed individuals on this planet that prove there is nothing common about common sense these days. Does that make it OK to not stop and think for a moment how your actions may be affecting those around you? I don’t think so.

Those ‘golfers’ that don’t think twice about playing from a set of tees that are obviously meant for players better than them and barely hit their tee shots past the forward tees should be banned for life or at least until their brains begin to function again. IF the course is relatively open and you are not holding anyone up, go for it. Play from the tips if you can afford to lose that many golf balls.

And then we have the “ball seekers” who seem to be on a mission to find every lost golf ball on the course from the past decade! No matter that they have stacked up 4-5 groups behind them as they seek out their precious treasure. It is after all, all about THEM! For gosh sakes go under the cover of darkness with a flashlight in hand if you can’t afford to buy golf balls. Now that would be a real adventure.

Let’s also single out the proverbial ‘snail’s pace’ golfers who have nothing other to do that day but be on the golf course…for as long as possible. Does it make you feel empowered when you look back and realize half the city is being held up by your group? Do you also drive your cars 30mph below the speed limit just because you can? Come on folks, let’s realize that unless the golf course is all yours you need to learn to share. Playing well with others is a GOOD thing.

This diatribe could go on forever as I have barely scratched the surface of all the idiotic things that take place on the golf course and drive a lot of us crazy. Ignorance is NOT an excuse. If you suffer from the misconception that this is your world and the rest of us are uninvited guests, I would simply ask that you build your own course and only play there. Otherwise, you need to ‘get in the game’ and figure out how to act properly so that everyone enjoys the game.

Thanks for allowing me to vent here at Ladies on the Tee at www.sherrytabb.com. I feel better now. Can’t wait until I get back on the course..I think. Let me know if you think I am being too harsh or if I am ‘spot on’.

While playing in a Duramed ProAm in Mason, OH I was teamed with a young high school golfer that was awarded a spot in the event via an essay contest – not your normal way to get to play in such an event. This young woman is Brittany Zins, a soon-to-be senior at McAuley High School in Cincinnati, OH and she is not your ‘normal’ teenager. She is captain of the golf team, a member of the Drama Club, a Key Club Ambassador and…she has a part-time job!

Brittany is relatively new to the game of golf but her passion for it and her talent belie her lack of tenure playing. She is a native of Cincinnati. She, along with her father and brother are the ‘golfers in the family’…but not her mom…she doesn’t golf at all.’

The essay contest was sponsored by Cincinnati-based Rumpke Company, a waste management company. There were about 25 schools involved and a little over 30 students entered. Brittany stated “My coaches gave me the honor of representing McAuley in the contest (they gave it to me at a meeting). I got a letter at school telling me that I had won.”

The essay topic was “Environmental Stewardship’ and I have included her essay in this article. Her talent goes well beyond the golf course. She is a great example of what the youth of America has to offer our planet and it’s care going forward. She appreciates the beauty of the outdoors and that transcends into her love of the game of golf. We could all take a lesson from young women like Brittany, not so much about how to play golf (even though she is a very good player), but ways to preserve our resources and care for our planet for future generations.

As for Brittany’s future, she is undecided about her college pick but has Georgetown(KY) College, Wittenberg, Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) and Northern Kentucky University (NKU) on her list of possiblities. When asked what she would like to major in she said “I enjoy chemistry and I want to do something in the law so forensic science is kind of the in between.”

We wish Brittany Zins all the success possible in the future. She is definitely a ‘stand-out’ personality and a very conscientious and talented individual. It was this author’s pleasure to have met her.

Here is a re-print of her winning essay:

Brittany Zins

May 11, 2009

Environmental Stewardship

During the summer I enjoy playing golf outside in the beautiful nature, surrounded by occasional birdies, eagles, and many times family and friends. As I look around I notice in wonder and awe the trees, bushes, and even lakes. Although, while playing the game I try to avoid these things, I can’t help but wonder; without more stewards for the environment would these beautiful courses be here in 20 years?

Today many companies and citizens are trying to go green to help change the way in which we use the resources our environment offers. Changes such as hybrid vehicles and solar power are the newest ideas. I too am trying to make changes such as these with my family. Both my parents have switched to hybrid cars. This helps reduce the amount of pollutants our cars expel into the air. Car exhaust isn’t the only thing our new hybrid cars offer. They also conserve gas, a nonrenewable resource being quickly consumed in today’s fast paced world.

Along with changing cars, I also help recycle at home and school. Recycling plays a major part in helping to conserve the environment. Living within the environment, there are animals. By recycling I help save the lives of these animals that could eventually die out from human pollutants. Saving animals from extinction for future generations to enjoy, is being a good steward for the environment. Recycling helps to reduce the rate in which landfills are filling and the rate our natural resources are being consumed. Protecting our environment is important. Trees provide oxygen in our world. A great way to help offset deforestation is by planting a tree every year.

In an attempt to be more conscientious about utility bills in today’s economy, our family has developed energy saving routines. An environmental and money saving change we made at home recently is the use of florescent light bulbs instead of incandescent. This helps reduce the amount of energy used when lighting the room. Another conservation habit we developed is unplugging unused electronic devices and turning off lights when leaving a room. Our laundry habits have changed as well. Running the washing machine on cold water and the dryer on low heat helps to decrease the amount of energy used. Being more energy efficient is better for the environment.

The only pure, non polluted water left in our world comes from ice caps. When we use up our current water supply the ice caps will be the only thing left. For this reason I run water as little as possible. Conserving water through taking short showers, brushing my teeth without running water, and running the dishwasher only when full are a few ways which I try to help conserve.

Conserving our environment is very important to me because I would like for the rainforest, ice caps, and even golf courses to be here for my children and grandchildren to see. Saving the environment is part of our job as human beings.

Thanks for visiting Ladies on the Tee Golf Blog at www.sherrytabb.com. We hope you enjoyed ‘meeting’ Brittany. If you are aware of other ‘stand-out’ stories please let us now. As always, your comments are welcome and appreciated!

If you play golf at all I am sure there are certain things that ‘drive’ you crazy on and off the course. Well, being the quiet, demure person that I am (…NOT!!) let me share some of my personal golf pet peeves. There’s not enough time or space to discuss ALL of my pet peeves so sticking to the game of golf will have to suffice.

Let’s start at the beginning, shall we?

Golfers who arrive late to the course for their tee times. Did you ever hear of a watch? Worse yet….Golfers that arrive on time at the course for their tee time but screw around and end up checking in late with the starter. AAGH! I think starters should have guns and permission to remove these violators.

“Golfers’ that aren’t properly attired…i.e. in denim, jeans or tank tops. Take that crap to the beach… aready!!

Not having everything you need for your round of golf and constantly digging in your bag for items WHILE your playing partner is attempting to play their shot. Surely this is grounds for a DQ, isn’t it??

A golfer that never follows the flight of their shot much less any shots hit by their playing partners. And we wonder why it takes some golfers so long to find their ball. OK, if you have terrible eyesight you get a pass on this one ONLY if you let your partners know you can’t see and ask them to help you track your ball. Fair enough??

Spending way too much time looking for lost balls. This is typically an infraction of the older male golfers and most of time they are looking for balls that THEY didn’t even hit. They think they are on a great scavenger hunt and ‘he with the most balls at the end of the round wins’. WRONG! There is a time limit in the rules that maxes out the time to be spent on looking for a lost ball at 5 minutes. Start the stop watch…

Taking MULTIPLE practice swings before hitting a shot. Save that routine for when you get on Tour. Realize every time you take a practice shot you probably just wasted one of your best swings.

Not knowing where to stand to be out of sight when your playing partners are hitting their shots.

Talking incessantly during the round. Save some of that banter for the 19th hole where I can enjoy a drink while you are chattering away.

Never repairing a divot or ball mark AND having the audacity to complain about the conditions of the golf course. Taking time to put the course back in shape isn’t an option. If you want to play, repair your messes!!

Not knowing any golf ETIQUETTE or basic rules… which would eliminate most of my pet peeves. I think every course should require golfers to pass a Golf Etiquette test before being allowed to tee it up.

That’s just my short list of golf pet peeves. I’m sure you have your own as well so I invite you to add yours in the comments section below. It will be interesting to see what ‘drives’ everyone else crazy!!

I know this blog is primarily based on golf and building the women’s golf community but after the latest steroid issue with ARod and MLB, my disgust grew over the lack of integrity and respect we are seeing in too many elements of our society. I need to rant for bit so if you will, please bear with me and add your comments at the end.

It’s not bad enough that in Corporate America those Corporate Executives who have allowed their companies to go into bankruptcy, fail altogether and close their doors and/or ask for bailout money, have the audacity to take millions of dollars in bonuses and be unwilling to take a reduction in their huge salaries. Talk about lack of accountability that is right there in our faces. That is a smack down for hard-working Americans everywhere.

But it doesn’t stop there. It is evident in our sports world as well. We see the numbers of ‘top athletes’ who have been taking performance enhancing drugs while racking up numbers for the record books and being paid HUGE salaries for doing so…illegally. Do those numbers really mean anything now? On top of that, athletes across the board are paid huge amounts of money based on past performances or due to a very good negotiating agent bidding for them. Granted the sports world is predominantly a privately held conclave of business owners and there is not a public shareholder issue in all of the sports arenas. However, the fan base, i.e. the public attendance and support, is the primary funding vehicle for most sports franchises and events. I am not naïve enough to believe that TV and corporate sponsorships aren’t key to the income stream but if we were to remove the fan base who cares if the sport is televised or the XYZ Company has naming rights to a stadium etc.

The bottom line is that THE FAN BASE is hurting almost unilaterally on an economic level and I have yet to see any major discussion revolving around reducing the executive compensation of the respective tours or teams, the salaries or the prize winnings to professional athletes across the board. <a href="http://www.sherrytabb.com/general-commentary/is-the-sky-falling-on-womens-golf-or-not/"title="Is the Sky Falling on Women's Golf?" target="_self">Golf is hurting with sponsorships and losing participation at local levels. Why then is winning $1,000,000 or more for a single event still in the mix? Baseball players being paid multi-multi millions of dollars in today’s economy seems obscene to me as well. There has to be a new mentality that accepts the fact that we are facing an unprecedented time in our economic history and everyone needs to do their part…from the top down!!

Please don’t misunderstand me; I am not against companies or individuals making a fair profit or a fair wage. That is capitalism at its finest. However, how much is too much when a larger percentage of the fan base every day can no longer afford to attend the events or support the companies that are paying millions of dollars to the top players or executives???

What is wrong with performance based pay whether it is on a corporate basis or in the sports world? Why not have a base salary and performance bonuses paid AFTER achieving the desired level of achievement? You don’t measure up and you don’t make the BIG BUCKS. Plain and simple! At least golf and tennis earnings are paid out on a performance basis at the events (endorsement contracts are not a part of this particular conversation even though they are intricately woven within the fabric of this entire discussion). If an industry is suffering, and aren’t almost all industries in trouble today, why not reduce the outlay of cash to everyone, including but not limited to the workers or athletes. The top brass needs to start looking at what they are doing personally to ‘downsize’ their pocketbooks. This has to be all-inclusive.

We are facing an unprecedented crisis and we have to realize that adjustments need to be made for survival. Hopefully, this will be temporary and the economy will rebound. The lessons to be learned and implemented however, should be long-lasting.

I thank you for your indulgence for this off beat post but there are times you just need to get things off your chest. There is so much more that could be said but I will stop and look for your thoughts.

The recent PGA Merchandise Show was deemed a success in today’s economy because its participation numbers were only off by 4.5% from last year. The stalwarts in the industry were there (i.e. Adidas, Nike, Titleist, Taylor Made, Cutter Buck, Ping and on and on). There were even some new companies that were ‘launching’ their products at the show. They are either very brave or extremely unfortunate to be trying to get off the ground in this economy.

The Show always offers a plethora of things to touch, see and feel and this year was not a disappointment. If a newcomer to golf were to attend the PGA Show they would be sure that the recession has not hit the golf industry. The glitz and glamour was everywhere. Young beauties were handing out information for their respective companies to anyone that came near. Trust me…a lot of literature was handed out, not sure any of it was read but that’s a whole other topic. The latest and greatest tools of the trade were on display from golf clubs, GPS range finders, training tools and gimmicks, high end fashion, full-swing simulators to golf carts and driving range accessories.

The thing that really caught my attention though was the appearance of two well-known LPGA stars from different generations, greeting fans in two totally different areas of the convention center. It’s not THAT they were there. It was HOW they interacted with the crowd. The two women I am referring to are Nancy Lopez and Paula Creamer.

The Pink Panther

I witnessed Paula at the Adidas booth signing autographs and posing for pictures. That’s all in a day’s work. What caught my attention is how she acted when a young girl of no more than 9 years of age approached her. The girl was obviously star-struck and did manage to get Paula’s autograph but it didn’t stop there. Paula took more time than usual and asked the young girl questions about things in general. When Paula then offered up a chance for her to have her picture taken with her ‘idol’ the smile that broke out on that young girl’s face was priceless. Front teeth missing and all, it was perhaps the sweetest smile I have seen in years.

Over at the Nancy Lopez Golf Booth, Nancy was signing autograph after autograph and in her typical style engaged everyone that stopped by.

Nancy Lopez

After signing one particular autograph, a baby held by the person just finishing up in line started crying. Nancy stood up, chatted a bit more with the mother and then offered to hold the baby to help settle her down. Of course, Nancy is a more than a golfer, she is a mother as well. Did she need to take the time to stop the procession of adoring fans for a few minutes to attend to a slightly cranky one? Not at all. She was just being Nancy.

These two ladies GET IT! They know what it means to be a role model and an Ambassador of the Game of Golf. They go the extra mile and add some personal attention to what some athletes feel is a necessary evil. Granted these aren’t extreme examples of connecting with fans but that’s what made them so noticeable. They were ordinary moments during an ordinary meet and greet session that left this author with an extraordinary sense of pride to be a witness to what makes the LPGA so wonderful. I have been and will continue to be a huge fan of both Paula Creamer and Nancy Lopez. These women ROCK!

Your comments are encouraged. Have you witnessed any “ordinary” moments like these?

Why are so many people, men and women, reluctant to take part in what may be one of the oldest and most beneficial games ever invented?? Perhaps it is a lack of understanding of all that golf offers on so many different levels.

1.	LIFETIME OF FUN: Golf is a tremendous game, sport and networking tool that can last a lifetime. It is not gender, age or skill specific.

2.	GET ONE WITH NATURE: Golf is played outdoors and provides an opportunity to stock up on your Vitamin D daily requirement (assuming you are playing on a sunny day!)

3.	CHARACTER ASSESSMENT: It is a game of honesty, ethics and integrity. It can give you a barometer of one’s true character and to get a ‘window’ into the soul of those that play. This is great for business and personal relationships UNLESS you are one who cheats!!

4.	PLAY BY YOURSELF: It is a game that can be played with a group or as an individual. If you feel the urge to play and no one else is available, no problem! You can play as a single or better yet get paired up with others at the course and forge new relationships.

5.	LEVEL PLAYING FIELD: There is a golf handicap system (GHIN) that helps to ‘even the playing field’ when playing with more experienced golfers. This means that no matter how many strokes it takes you to finish you may still ‘score’ better than some of the other players.

6.	EXERCISE: You can get as much or as little exercise as you wish. Walk the course and carry your own bag if you’d like or hop in the golf cart with your golf clubs loaded on the back and drive up to the ball. Either way golf is still a good workout!

7.	STRESS REDUCTION: You can spend quality time away from the stresses of life and enjoy the beauty of nature. I have never seen a golf course I didn’t like. There’s always a better view than from an office cubicle.

8.	CHALLENGE: There is constant challenge to improve and still have fun. You don’t have to compete against anyone but yourself if you even choose to compete at all.

9.	FASHION STATEMENTS: Golf offers a variety of styles of dress to ‘show off’ your personality. The better you feel about how you look the better you play! That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

10.	LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS: No matter what else came before this (that would be points 1 thru 9 above) the top benefit that golf offers is a medium to forge lifelong bonds and commonality that make gathering at the 19th hole more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Drinks all around, please!!>br>

There are so many more benefits that the game of golf offers. My intent here was to offer up some of the more universal ‘gifts’ the game offers. It can grow from a favorite pastime into a career, as it did with me. It can take you to the highest highs and the lowest lows if you choose to get into competition. No matter, the plain and simple truth is that golf is a game that keeps on giving and giving. Don’t be afraid to offer this ‘gift’ to others.

6. Play more games and read more books than you did in 2008.

7. Make time to practice meditation and prayer. They provide us with daily fuel for our busy lives.

8. Spend time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of six.

9. Dream more while you are awake.

10. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants. Eat less food that is manufactured in plants.

12. Try to make at least 3 people smile each day.

13. Clear clutter from your house, your car, your desk and let new and flowing energy into your life.

14. Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip, or issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.

15. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime .

16. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince & dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.

17. Smile and laugh more. It will keep the NEGATIVE BLUES away.

18. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.

19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

20. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

21. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

22. Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil the present.

23. Don’t compare your life to others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

24. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

25. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: ‘In five years, will this matter?’

26. Forgive everyone for everything.

27. What other people think of you is none of your business.

28. Remember GOD heals everything.

29. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

30. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

31. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.

32. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

33. The best is yet to come.

34. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

35. Do the right thing!

36. Call your family often. (Or email them to death!)

37. Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements: I am thankful for __________. Today I accomplished _________.

38. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.

39. Enjoy the ride. Remember this is not Disney World and you certainly don’t want a fast pass. You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy the ride.

40. Please share this to everyone you care about.

May your troubles be less,

May your blessings be more,

May nothing but happiness come through your door!

Here we are just days away from the magical mystery of Christmas. It seems like just yesterday that we were beginning the year 2008. My how time flies when you’re having fun! So much happened this year in the world of golf and the world in general, for that matter. So while we wait for Santa to climb down the chimney to leave presents for all us good girls and boys let’s take a quick look back at the year that’s about to end.

In the world of men’s golf Tiger won the U.S. Open on one leg then left the PGA Tour to have reconstructive surgery on his injured knee. The face of men’s golf changed significantly without Tiger’s presence. Padraig Harrington was the dominant force winning major after major only to succumb to his whirlwind schedule and leave the European team in a lurch in the Ryder Cup. In spite of Tiger’s absence, the US team dominated play at Valhalla in Louisville Kentucky. Captained by Paul Azinger the US Ryder Cup team thrashed the Nick Faldo led European team. Perhaps the US squad has finally learned how to play as a team. On a more serious note we saw one of golf’s great, Seve Ballesteros, felled by a brain tumor and having to undergo multiple brain surgeries. The good news is that he is out of the hospital and currently undergoing chemotherapy. We wish him the best!

On the women’s side the LPGA said goodbye to <a href="http://www.sherrytabb.com/general-commentary/are-we-really-saying-goodbye-to-annika/"title="Are We Saying Goodbye to Annika" target="_blank">Annika Sorenstam perhaps the greatest golfer the women’s tour has ever seen. In her stead Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer and Ji-Yai Shin rose to the challenge of fighting for the number one spot in women’s golf. There are others that are posed to make their run to the top of the leaderboard. Just recently Stacy Lewis and Michelle Wie earned their tour cards to play full-time on the LPGA circuit in 2009. Katherine Hull started the season with less than stellar results but by the midway point was in contention in almost every event she played. There is great potential for a new rivalry to surface and give the LPGA a much-needed marketing boost.

The key issue that was (and still is) paramount as the season progressed was the affect the economic climate would have on both the PGA and the LPGA tours going into 2009 and beyond. Sponsors have been lost, ticket sales are down and pro-am spots remain open in what is most certainly the toughest economic times we have seen in our lifetimes. What will be the look and feel of golf in the future? That remains to be seen. Like all other industries there will certainly need to be a tightening of the belt and the improvement of the product for marketability and sustainability.

No matter what, in the grand scheme of things golf is a just game that will continue to be enjoyed by those that truly recognize the beauty of its challenges? Perhaps we won’t play as often as we used to for the time being but I can’t imagine we will enjoy it any less.

On behalf of Ladies on the Tee Golf Blog @ <a href="http://www.sherrytabb.com"title="Ladies on the Tee Golf Blog" target="_blank">www.sherrytabb.com I thank you for visiting and joining in our golf community.

Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy and Prosperous New Year to each and every one of you.
