Finally (only in the order the books were presented to me) is an instructional product for women golfers… Weight Training for Women’s Golf by Kai Fusser, M.S. Fusser worked with Annika Sorenstam as her personal trainer for over 10 years. It was during that period that her strength, fitness and achievements on the golf course skyrocketed. He has worked with many other world class athletes in sports other than golf also. His approach may be universally applied to all ages and abilities.

Fusser’s book provides a very easy to follow regimen and explanation of what he wants you to achieve through his program. Women of all ages will benefit from this program even if they don’t play golf. Weight training done the proper way with the proper understanding of form and execution will allow you to develop improved flexibility and strength. For me this means better endurance and hopefully, more length and control over my shots.

What I am writing about here is my perception of the book. Personally I have not been able to test his exercises and program to give you my own results. I had surgery shortly after receiving a copy of this book for review and am still rehabbing. Once I am released to do more aggressive training this book will be at my side.

The only disappointment I have with the book is that the majority of the photos depicting the exercises are taken of males. Given the number of females Kai has worked with and…the title of this book…I would think that showing women doing the exercises as described would be a more logical approach to this training program. Other than that I think the program presents a well balanced and segmented approach to achieving the results you want at the level your own level.

Once I give it a go I will be back to share my results.

Good way to start off the new year!!!

Next up is The Nine Tenths Rule by Stephen Mitchell. This story begins in 1874 at St. Andrews with two old and crusty adversaries with total disdain for each other who have placing intoedotion a contest that would transcend generations and risk the livelihoods and fortunes of those that followed. Mitchell blends golf nostalgia with cutthroat deception, intrigue and and mystery. This book is part of a series taken from The Bainbridge Diaries, each of which is a golf themed legal mystery.

What I liked most was the suspense that the author built up in the quest of two families, each descendants of the original two parties to this mess, to find the ‘trophy club’ that would grant the holder the rights to the other’s land, home and possessions. A lot was at stake and Mitchell superbly takes us through the highs and lows, ebb and flow of emotions as the participants became keenly aware of just how much they stood to lose if they were not the holder of the Trophy Club. The tension was palpable!

What an enjoyable read this book was and I do highly recommend it more for its mystery and cunning plot than for any golf historical relevance. The ending certainly leaves you waiting impatiently for the next of the series to be released!!!

OK..I know Christmas and Boxing Day are here and gone but that doesn’t mean that the gift-giving is necessarily over. Here is the first in a series of products that I recently reviewed that I think would be of interest to golfers and non-golfers alike.

The Swinger is a book written by Michael Bamberger and Alan Shipnuck that is a fictional account that mirrors the recent exploits of one, Tiger Woods. The main character in this book is professional golfer, Herbert X. Tremont (‘Tree’) who is at the top of his game, the top of almost every leaderboard, on top of too many women to count and happily married with children for a while.

What the authors do is take you inside the locker room, the bedroom and visit the goings-on with this fictional super-athlete as told by sportswriter, Josh Dutra who is hired by Tremont Inc to handle his press and as it turns out to write his story.

Let me say that I was not too interested in reading this book when it arrived on my doorstep. My opinion of the whole Tiger mess was that another elitist athlete got caught with his pants down and screwed up his life…end of story. However, I agreed to read and review it and honestly, I am glad I did. I found the approach to the plot was both humorous and sincere. It gave me, the reader, a glimpse of what I would believe to be an accurate look into the life on the PGA Tour for a lot of these guys but more so for those at the top of their games. I don’t condone what Tree (or Tiger ) did…that is not my call but I do appreciate what ‘they’ have given to the game of golf.

The authors have done a wonderful job of letting the reader in on some of the juiciest and secretive sides of professional golf. Worth the read for a light-hearted tale.

Another great novel by James Ross

Author, James Ross’ newest novel, Pabby’s Score, is his fifth in a series set in East St. Louis at the local golf course, Prairie Winds. We once again meet up with the locals that take up regular residence at the golf course with J. Dub Schroeder and Julie at the helm of the course and the action.

Like with Ross’ previously released novels, the author provides a masterfully intertwined story line where life’s lesson, pitfalls and evil intersect life on the golf course. In Pabby’s Score, Pabby is a severely autistic orphan living in a group foster home. He becomes part of the ‘gang’ at Prairie Winds due to a socialization program that is designed to take a couple of the teens from the foster home to a setting that they otherwise would never experience…a golf course.

While Pabby and Shae, another resident of the group home, along with their caretakers make regular visits to Prairie Winds, there is another story going on that exposes the greed, corruption and fraud that is the underbelly of the legal and political system in this part of the world.

Ross masterfully weaves the characters in and out of the sub-plots and keeps the reader spellbound while trying to figure out how they are interconnected. Mid-way through the read it seems the title’s meaning becomes clear….but…wait! Is there more to it than meets the eye?

This novel is not only an easy read but its message of legal manipulations, corruption and abuse of power is timely and spot on. The innocence of these mentally challenged characters adds a stark comparison to the evil that engulfs them and changes their lives forever.

Even if you are not an avid golfer, this novel will not disappoint you. I am already anticipating Ross’ next release….whatever and whenever that isJ!

Let me first start with the information put out by the company:

Mobitee Golf Assistant, the most sophisticated, multi-platform (iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Nokia, Windows Phone, Bada) golf GPS application has just released its newest update on iPhone, now giving players the ability to use shot tracking. Adding to its long list of astonishing features including satellite view, rangefinder, flyover videos, golf guide and more, shot tracking allows users to record and track all their hits, register the position of a shot and associate a club to it. This multiple award-winning application will also calculate the average distance taken with each club and register the best first shot from the tee box. Having a caddie is no longer a privilege! Mobitee is available on every App Store or on www.mobitee.com for only $24.99!

See below for screenshots:

Aerial View Shot tracking Rangefinder (Augmented reality)

After testing the product myself, I found it to be very accurate and loved the ‘fly over’ feature that shows the entire layout of the hole you are on….especially useful if you are playing an unfamiliar course. That’s not to say I didn’t struggle a bit at first with finding a course in my area that was already set up. What I had to do was to go the main website and enter the required information myself which wasn’t too bad after I did the first one.

The features of the Mobitee app are remarkable in that they use a satellite view of the course not an artist’s rendition. You may enter your club information for yardages and the app will prompt use to use the club based on the yardage position. However, there are some issues that I noted. One is that the app doesn’t automatically change to the next hole so you need to be mindful as to where you are on the course. It doesn’t take long to figure out if you haven’t advanced the screen when the yardgae on the screen comes up as something way out of whack. Another is that even though there is a scorecard tracking option built-in to the app, that is as far as the tracking goes for now. Michael Morales, President of Mobitee was quick to assure me that a very robust system of tracking statistics for your rounds will be coming soon.

Beyond the features of the app itself, obvious concerns using a smartphone app for an entire round of golf was the battery life of the phone itself and the visibility of the phone screen in sunny conditions. These are unique to the phone that you may use but I found on my Droid Incredible 2 as long as I turned the screen off in between shots, I made it with battery life to spare after my 18-hole rounds. My screen did have glare but since I use a cart the screen was clear and visible while I looked at it in the cart. Shady areas were fine as well.

Bottom line…for the price of $24.99 I would recommend this app over the purchase of a stand alone GPS product that costs a few hundred dollars. There is no annual fee associated with this product and there is even a FREE lite version that is offered as well. For what we pay for our smartphones theses days it’s good that we can save some money while using apps geared to them

For those that have been following Ladies on the Tee since the beginning, it is probably apparent that I sometimes take a less than reverent look at the goings-on in the world of golf. Don’t get me wrong. I am quite respectful of the history of the game and the pioneers that got us to this point in time. But let’s face it…golf is JUST a game!!

Having said that, when I was offered copies of Bobby Rusher’s two books, How to line Up Your Fourth Putt and When To Regrip Your Ball Retriever, to read and review I jumped on the offer.

These books would be right up my alley. After all, I do adhere to that wonderful old adage…’if you can’t have fun stay home’ or something like that. Rusher has put together some very funny, a la, irreverent advice for all of us duffers.

One thing I will say is that men might find some of the humor funnier than women. I say that because there were sections in both books where I was shaking my head thinking how my male golf partners would be rolling on the ground laughing but I found those sections moderately slapsticky. The rest of the content was well –delivered and full of comic thoughts and statements.

Bottom line is I would really encourage everyone, male and female. to grab copies of these books and even Rusher’s music CD, ‘Music to Shank By The Mighty Mulligans’. There are way too many amateurs that tend to take the game too seriously and really need to lighten up. These products will be the perfect release to help you put things in perspective and maybe even lighten up enough to have some fun and who knows….maybe even play better golf

Here is the backdrop of how all of this got started. Thought you might enjoy this light-hearted banter:

“Hands down, my friend George wins the prize as the primary inspiration for the comic Training Manuals on the game of golf from Bobby Rusher.

We were playing yet another of our highly competitive matches at a low level of competence, having agreed at the outset that if one of us broke 100 and the other didn’t then that would be an automatic $5 win. The use of constant banter during play was also approved in advance. Of course, Mulligans and Shapiros were always included as two of the major tools of play.

Anyway, on the second hole, I shot a nine. George then said, “Bobby, you’d better read my book.” I said, “Oh yeah? What book?” And he said: “How to line up your fourth putt.” I quipped that he really was such a brilliant humorist. And I called him a large bunker-butt. He laughed and said that just looking at me made him shank, and he called me a shank-faced nitwit, further suggesting that I was light in the loafers.

On the next hole, I suggested to him that he should read my book, and he enquired as to its title, to which I replied: “How to duck hook from the bunker and still get home in 10.” He smirked and took out a three-iron in order to flub a slightly uphill lie about five yards forward. I said, “You’re still away, Georgie,” and he said, “I’m taking a mulligan.” I said that was allowed only on the tee, but he replied that he was taking one of his two traveling Mulligans, “or,” he said, “Have you forgotten, my friend, about the travelers?” I said ok, but added that he needed a lesson on how to get more distance off the shank. He said that he considered me to be a bogey-brained chili-dipper.

This continued for the entire 7-hour round. I forget who won. But on the plane ride home I sat with a gin & tonic and wrote down as many “How To’s” as I could. This list became the Table of Contents for the first book. I eagerly showed the list to my wife when I got home, and told her I was going to write a book! She said, “Great, honey. Great.”

The rest is history.”

One of golf’s most frustrating and compelling components is the ability, or in most cases, the inability to shape your shots. What?? Do you mean people can actually move the ball in different ways outside of slicing directly into the woods?? Say it isn’t so!!

Most women do not give this a second thought and I think that is a mistake. Adding another dimension to your game may take your enjoyment to a whole new level. I am not talking about adding hundreds of yards to your distance. Let’s keep it real. This is about knowing how to execute shots to get you out of trouble and potentially add a few extra yards to your shot as well. Nothing wrong with that in my book!

This year my goal is to work on adding a draw (intentionally) to my game. Up to this point it has seemed so complicated and requires sooo much practice time I couldn’t imagine working that time into my schedule.

Recently, a couple of friends of mine have introduced a 21-day, step-by-step program to teach average golfers how to draw the ball. It is The Draw Blueprint. The beauty of it is that so much of the practice may be done from the comfort of your home.

I like the program so much I agreed to help them get the word out. I invite you to check it out at http://www.drawtheball.com. No sense in me having all the fun this season:-)

Author, James Ross, takes us back to Prairie Winds Golf Course in East St. Louis for his latest novel, Opur’s Blade. For those of you who have read Ross’ earlier releases, Lifetime Loser, Finish Line and Tuey’s Course, you will feel like you are reconnecting with friends in the clubhouse.

J Dub Schroeder, the golf pro at Prairie Winds is back and at the center of things as he discovers a raw golf talent in a young boy named Owen Purler, Jr. This young boy arrives at J Dub’s golf course with his mother, who is seeking to show her son another side of life. Owen’s father is a long hauler and is absent from his son’s life most of the time. He is also not keen on having Owen getting involved in a game they obviously can’t afford.

Turns out though that Owen is quite the golf prodigy and J Dub becomes a somewhat surrogate father helping Opur (as he is nicknamed by the regulars at the golf course) not only refine his golf skills but also to navigate through life and the trauma that he faces early on. Opur falls in love with the game and with the characters that are part of his new family at the course and needs both of them to deal with his tragedies.

The moment I started reading this book I didn’t want to put it down. At the beginning there is more focus on life, passion, sex and dealing with real family issues. Once Opur goes off on his own and finds himself qualifying for the BIGGEST tournament in golf, the story gets heavily into golf and what is happening on the course at the tournament.

Maybe there is too much detail about the hole-by-hole play but Ross does continue to weave valuable lessons throughout the back and forth conversations with Opur and J Dub who is serving as his caddy at the event. All in all you know there is a major struggle going on inside the ropes and inside Opur’s head. The ending was not what I expected at all and I am not sure I liked the ending. What I do know is I want a sequel to this novel sooner rather than later to help me pick up the pieces and get some closure.

Recommendation: Good read even for the non-golfer.

Thanks for visiting Ladies on the Tee at www.sherrytabb.com. Please read the book and let us know what YOU think!!

Disclaimer: A copy of this book was provided free by the Author for me to read and review. This review is totally my opinion and is not influenced by the ‘gift’ of the book.

A Long Walk in Search of a Country, a Pint, and the Next Tee

Today, St. Patrick’s Day, I thought it would be fitting to share with you my thoughts about, A Course Called Ireland. Please know that I didn’t coin this phrase. This is the title of a book by Tom Coyne that was given to me a few weeks ago to read and review.

The subtitle is rather catchy, “A Long Walk in Search of a Country, a Pint, and the Next Tee”. It certainly got my attention. So here on St. Patrick’s Day, I am sitting down at my computer feeling very Irish as Sherry O’Connor (my ancestry name) to tell you about this book.

A Course Called Ireland is as much a book on the history of Ireland as it is an inside look through the eyes of the Author into all of the wonderful Irish links golf courses and the quirkiness of the island’s inhabitants. It is quite humorous in parts. The premise behind this is Tom Coyne’s master plan to go back to Ireland (where he once visited as a boy with his father) to play as many of the Irish Coastal golf courses as he could over a four month span. Sounds pretty blasé doesn’t it? Well, I forgot to mention that his trek around the entire coastline of Ireland was on foot!!

This in itself makes you question the sanity of the Author but it provides a wonderfully insightful look into the very core of what makes Ireland, Ireland in a way a motor-coach trip could never achieve. Being Irish and an avid golfer, I consumed the pages with a fervor driven by interest in what was going to happen next both on and off the golf course.

Coyne let’s you see things a world away in a way that makes you feel a kinship with the characters he encounters along the way. I could close my eyes and imagine the cottages he passed, the pubs he frequented, the unpaved and somewhat dangerous roads he walked and the beauty of the many, many golf courses he played. Wow! I am ready to book my own trip there but trust me I won’t be walking the trip and probably not walking the golf courses either:-)

If you want to be entertained, laugh and get some good Irish history at the same time, I highly recommend this book. You do not need to be an avid golfer or Irish to enjoy it. Well done, Mr. Coyne!

Sorry for the delay in finishing the story of my first time out for the 2010 golf season. There are times that I really think computers are the bane of my existence. Definitely a ‘love-hate’ relationship! OK…time to move on.

As I was saying in my previous blurb here on Ladies on the Tee, I had some highs and lows to my first round of the 2010 golf season. The purest shots I hit were from my Sweet Spot Hybrid #4. Did you ever have a shot where you know you kissed it ‘just’ right?? The feeling is immeasurable and in my case, mostly unrepeatable. I felt extremely lucky in that I was blessed with more than one in that round and they all came with the same club. Now, I did hit a few great feeling drives but with the ball teed up I don’t count that as a remarkable shot. These were shots from the rough (hello, that’s where I was most of the round:-)) Not only did I get the attention of my playing partners with the bright black and pink graphics on this Sweet Spot Hybrid but the quality of those shots left them wondering what this strange looking club was all about. For some reason I could not get the guys to give it a go. Hmmm! What about ‘real men wear pink’? Doesn’t that translate to ‘real men play pink’???

I digress…what I really want to tell you about is a very innovative towel that I was given to test out. Sounds like an oxymoron doesn’t it? Innovative towel?? The towel in use this round is from Bright Spot Solutions and they call it the Spotless Swing Premium Multi-Use Golf Towel.

This towel is pretty cool as it has a textured fabric inside that is very useful in cleaning the grooves of your clubs. I am a fanatic for wiping off the face of my clubs after every shot so this little ‘extra’ had my name all over it. The rest of the inside area helps keep or trap the mud, grass etc from the club and keep it on the inside area. That leaves the outside area clean enough to wipe your hands, your grips or even your face (not something I tested as I was NOT sweating on this brisk, windy day).

Overall, this is a pretty ingenious little adaptation for one of the most useful tools in your bag. It looks like this will replace the stained and awful looking ’white’ towels I traditionally carry with me. Adding a little more style to my bag is certainly not a bad thing. The Spotless Swing comes in red and black. I was given a red one for my test even though personally I like the looks of the black one better. I give this ‘gadget’ a thumbs up for simplicity and overall usefulness. They are not paying me to say good things even though I was provided the test sample. I really like the towel! Now if it would just help me lower my score next time out………….
