Why is it that almost every time you read comments from men about Women’s Golf the subject of ‘looks’ comes up. I didn’t realize that I would play better if I had a make-over, lost 25 lbs and looked like a 20-something. Guess now I know what is wrong with my game!!
It is infuriating to see comments that revert back to the ‘not worth following unless you are a looker’ variety. Somehow that does not transcend to the standards set for male golfers. How much sense would it be to discount the talent on the PGA Tour because the players aren’t handsome? There are plenty of ‘not so pretty faces’ on the men’s tour but that doesn’t stop me from watching them in action. I enjoy the sport as a whole and the personalities that make it so varied.
I suppose that as women we have ‘evolved’ to the point that talent is talent no matter what the package. Believe me, I understand that corporate sponsorship money is dictating a lot of the glamour focus on the LPGA but give me a break already! How long could any sports group last if talent was always riding shotgun to the ‘pretty factor’??
Maybe that’s why the LPGA is facing its toughest test since it was founded decades ago. There are certainly some very pretty faces out there but that is not the substance of the LPGA. Here we are again fighting for equality and a level playing field. Can these women play golf? You bet they can! So let’s get rid of the need to exploit the ‘sexiness’ of the tour and build the platform on showcasing the tremendous international talent that is there.
This rant is my personal opinion that exploded after reading another dim-witted comment online. There is so much more that could be said about this topic but I believe it’s time for my makeover.

Hey everyone, unfortunately I don’t feel this double standard is true to only golf. I feel it is in many women’s sports. Why can’t the women be truely respected on talent? Is the reason that the producer’s of our sports programs are men? There are still some glass ceilings to be broken. In soccer when the US team won several years ago, it was a nike sports bra that caught the media’s attention not the goal or teamwork that won the game. I appreciate the shot more than who shot it or even more so what they were wearing…..call me silly.
Mary,
I couldn’t agree more with you that this is much larger issue than with just golf. Just today I saw a picture in a local paper regarding some Olympian softball players that came to town to work with some of our youth players and the only picture shown was one of Jennie Finch. Coincidence that she happens to be a long-legged blonde beauty??? I rather doubt it. Certainly she is a great pitcher and plays well enough to have made the Olympic team. Why not include Crystl Bustos? she was in town with Jennie. This is not in any way directed at Jennie. She was not the one who took the photo and had it published.
There is so much that needs to be done tp promote women’s sports the RIGHT way but until women as a group GET INVOLVED and demand respect for their talent that glass (or grass) ceiling will never go away.
