Michelle Wie is taking the one of the first smart steps towards establishing her golf career in a positive way in a long time. She is playing in the LPGA Q School 5-day Final Qualifying Event underway at the LPGA International Courses in Daytona Beach, FL.

She has been the subject of controversy ever since she arrived on the professional golf scene as a tender 13 year-old.

Does she have talent? Absolutely! Can she get back on track to showcase that talent and establish herself as a dominate force on the LPGA Tour? That is the real question. Her less than impressive record in LPGA events speaks volumes for how she has been handled to date. No matter what she has stated in press conferences and other interviews, trying (unsuccessfully to date) to compete on the men’s tour has taken its toll.

You cannot continue to miss cut after cut in PGA events and then not perform well on the LPGA and not lose confidence…I don’t care who you are or how much natural talent you have. The negative effect is HUGE! Wie needs to re-focus her game plan and play golf at the level she is capable of, let her natural swing break through and try to get rid of the robotized swing and off-course canned comments we have seen of late.

The issue here is trying to resurrect one of the great talents in US women’s golf at a time that the LPGA needs her the most and vice versa. We can only hope that she can bring her A game to Q School and get on with what she does best – play golf! Once she establishes herself as a top player on the LPGA, if she chooses to continue to try to make the cut on the PGA so be it. We wish her well.

Let’s hope that 2009 is the year of the Wiesy and she challenges Lorena Ochoa and Paula Creamer for top honors.

Michael Jordan use to say – basketball brings all the other rewards. This is where so many young players in all sports go wrong. They work on getting the endorsements, etc before they work on their game. I don’t think Wie focused enough on her game to even know if she has a game good enough to the top of the LPGA. Paula Creamer is an example of the fact that it takes more than a long drive to get to the top of LPGA leader boards.

    Kayann,

Well said! The cart seems to be in front of the horse with a lot of young talent these days. I have seen Michelle Wie play in person and witnessed some tremendous raw talent. Unfortunately, raw talent is not all that is needed.

I am hoping that with a new coach, her college experience, a la the separation from family and ‘being on her own’ a bit will produce a more mature, confident and focused player.

    Time will tell!
