As Thanksgiving here in the US approaches, it seems appropriate to give thanks for all that golf has provided me. It goes without saying that I am extremely thankful for my family and friends on the larger scale but the game of golf has also been instrumental in providing me many rewards over the past 13 years. Being a sports nut and a once avid tennis player, golf was a natural progression to add to my life and I am so fortunate to have chosen that path. Here is what I mean…
I have come to learn humility from the exasperation of not being able to get that little round ball to go anywhere near the direction I was intending. How could I be so good in other sports and truly ‘suck’ in golf?? What I found was that I expected way too much, too soon. Once I let loose of my desire to be perfect and to ‘go with the flow’ things improved drastically. In short order I went from being a tennis pro to a golf beginner. I am at peace with that! (for now!) Amazing how that plays out in the larger scale of life!!
Another great thing that golf has given me was the opportunity to leave Corporate America and the ‘rat race’ behind. Who needs the stress and strain of ‘working for the Man’ when you can start up a new business in an industry that you know nothing about and had only played the game once prior to jumping into it??? Call me crazy but my friends said it best: “I was looking for a legitimate reason to spend time on the golf course.” I knew from the beginning that golf offered a challenge and a venue that was irresistible to me. Thirteen years later, I am still passionate about the game and the golf industry in which I work. To that end, I am extremely lucky and thankful.
There are friendships and relationships that have been formed on and off the course, that are irreplaceable. To anyone that has embraced this game you know what I am talking about. To those who have not yet found their way to the ‘links’, my wish for you on this Thanksgiving Eve is that you have the chance to expand your horizons and give it a try. Who knows? This time next year you might be adding ‘golf’ to your list of ‘thanks’.
