What I have found with training women over the years is the need and benefit of training strength, stability and subsequently power. Women often times lack the strength and stability, or essentially the power needed to hit the golf ball an adequate distance. We know that the one major difference between men and women is in the area of upper body strength. This is an indisputable fact, however the good news is, women can get stronger.

Improving strength and stability can make the greatest difference in improving the swing and becoming more successful on the course. Additionally, we know that power not only in the golf swing, but in everyday, activities is something we lose quickly as we age.

In regards to stability, I am referring to the body’s ability to stabilize or control joint positions during a specific movement, such as the golf swing. Many people speak of this as core strength but I think that description is misunderstood. Stability is needed to not only control these joint positions, but to transfer energy from one body part to another. The lumbar spine & pelvic region, is one of many areas where this is important. The better you can stabilize, the easier energy is transferred throughout the swing.

When training strength and stability I often refer to it as dynamic or functional in nature. This is when you utilize all planes of motion of the body, and then of course be golf specific. Isolated strengthening may be appropriate in certain situations but you should mostly strengthen in this dynamic way. Below is an exercise that will help develop stability, rotational strength and power.

The exercise here is not only dynamic but is performed in good golf posture. This not only develops dynamic strength but good trunk stability. You can use tubing connected in a door or the cable machine. Start with light weight so you can learn the proper form of the exercise. Punch downward alternating sides. Make sure to rotate through the upper trunk and keep your pelvis/hips stable.

Not sure what else I can add to the article as it was written by a fitness expert. I would suggest if you have a health club close by you chat with a trainer about some golf specific exercises. Otherwise you might try to contact the author, Mark Tolle through his website listed at the end of the article.

Good luck and thanks for being a reader! All the best!

Thanks for the great tips! My golf game has been getting a little rusty, however my son just went way to golf management school, so I know I am going to have to start playing again. A lot of people don’t realize how much training it actually takes to become a good golfer, so I appreciate your advice.
