I totally agree with the article posted on Nick’s Golf Palace Blog on the frustration with slow play on the course. It’s one thing if the entire course is backed up. That is a tee time management issue that starts inside the clubhouse.
But…it seems it’s usually one or two groups that wreak havoc on the course. Certainly too many practice swings and not being ready for your turn are culprits as Nick’s article suggests. Getting players on the correct tees can also help. One local course used the player’s handicap or average score to ‘assign’ them their tee box for the round. Albeit this doesn’t prevent them from going to longer tees once they are out on the course, it at least plants the seed for optimum playing time and a pleasant experience for all. Of course, this brings up the issue of the stereotyped forward tees as being the ‘women’s tees’. I’ll reserve that article for another day.
What I hate most is that staff personnel at a lot of clubs are quick to point out the issue of keeping pace to women but don’t seem to offer the same caution to the men.
In my experience I have found that a lot of older men are guilty of slow play. They spend what seems to be hours searching for lost balls. It’s like they are on a scavenger hunt or perhaps the guy with the most golf balls at the end of the round wins!!
Whatever, the bottom line is EVERY golfer needs to study the basic rules and etiquette of the game so we respect the course, the game and our fellow golfers. It shouldn’t be that difficult. A little common sense….oh, sorry, there’s nothing common about common sense in today’s world.
Thanks for letting me sound off. My mission is to help grow the game of golf, especially for women. What do you think? I invite you to leave your comments and share our site www.sherrytabb.com with your fellow golfers.
