As exciting as this year’s Solheim was with the competition going down to the wire, I think it is important to look back at the glorious history of this premier women’s golf event. I stated in a previous article that Karsten and Louise Solheim started this magnificent competition between the best women golfers in Europe and the top US women golfers with a vision of it lasting 10 years. That was in 1990.
Fortunately for all women’s golf fans around the globe, the Solheim Cup tenure has far surpassed the founders’ vision. It seems hard to believe that 20 years ago the pioneers of the LPGA and LET squared off in Lake Nona, FL. So many thrilling moments in women’s golf have taken place inside this event. I feel it is only fitting to offer a tribute in pictures for every year this biennial event has been played.
The one additional point I would like to make is that this event has been and continues to be a tremendous grooming ground for future tour stars via the PING Junior Solheim Cup. Like their older counterparts, the US Junior Team beat Team Europe in the Junior Solheim competition. The US team was captained by none other than the LPGA’s leading lady, Nancy Lopez. A number of these fine young women will soon become household names in the pro ranks in the very near future. The youth golf movement is alive and well both here in the United States as well as throughout Europe.
The Solheim Cup is a great showcase blending the past, present and the future of women’s golf and is unmatched in the world of women’s golf. For those looking to change its format to include other countries I would beg them to consider the history and tradition the Solheim Cup offers. I agree that other players in other countries should have the opportunity to represent their countries and play in a match play similar to this but NOT at the expense of altering this one.
