What in the world is happening in women’s golf today?

The premier women’s golf magazine, Golf for Women, closed its doors with its July/August issue. The speculated underlying reason….not enough corporate backing (i.e. advertising) to keep it afloat. Talk about corporate mainstream missing the boat! Do corporations not realize that women golfers represent a very under-served segment of the golf world as it is but frankly do they not know who controls the purse strings in most households?? Gimme a break already.

The GFW magazine, albeit at times a little too fru-fru for me, did offer up a variety of topical issues, tips, techniques and community for women around the globe. I am like most women…not interested in the other golf magazines out there as they are too male-oriented when it comes to discussing what women deal with on and off the course, from club selection to playing obstacles to male-dominated stereotypes.

In addition to this debacle, we have witnessed sponsor after sponsor backing out of the LPGA Tour events. Is this because of the economy (I don’t see them leaving the PGA events in the same numbers), the leadership of the LPGA and some of the unpopular decisions made this year (eg. the English-only policy), the change in tour scheduling or just that the LPGA needs a shot in the arm with their PR and marketing efforts? Some have mentioned that their lack of interest in the LPGA is because there are so many foreign players. So what? It seems to me that if that is truly a root cause then we should be doing everything we can to build the US women’s game with our junior players and First Tee programs. Pulling away from the women’s segment isn’t going to help the growth of the game. The Game of Golf Needs Women!!

I don’t have the answers to why this is happening but I do offer a solution in part to remedy the seeming abandonment we are facing in women’s golf. That is for us to rally together in a community to share our experiences and seek camaraderie in spirit to grow this game for women/girls of all ages. This blog can begin to serve that purpose by providing a central point to discuss the game and the ways we can impact it in our own backyards. Talk about building a collective brain trust…..this will be HUGE if you visit often and let your fellow golfers or golfers-to-be know where to go – http://www/sherrytabb.com.
