In the next few articles I will be defining some very common golf terms, in no particular order (as they say on ‘Dancing with the Stars’) from a totally personal perspective. If there is some golf terminology not covered in these posts, please let me know and I’ll do my best to define it for you.
Please realize that my interpretations may not adhere to the strict definitions found in most golf books.
Here we go:
GOLF – a game that causes one to lose one’s sanity quickly. It involves chasing a little white (pink, blue or yellow) ball around a well manicured plot of land (i.e. golf course) trying to get the ball from Point A (tee box) to Point B (very small hole cut on the green) in a specified number of shots… or less…or more. Players use sticks (i.e. golf clubs) to move the ball from one point to the next hoping to do so in a reasonably straight line with as few shots (i.e. strokes) as possible.
Who’s kidding who here? It is a fact that all golf balls have minds of their own so no matter where YOU are aiming, the BALL always seem to take a more ‘scenic’ route!! My personal mantra is “Every swing is a new adventure.”
Oh sorry…I digress.
The game originated somewhere a long time ago. Perhaps it was with the cave men. They used clubs back then didn’t they? Isn’t there a primal urge to swing at things with clubs that lends itself beautifully to the mechanics of the game of golf? Of course, fingers have been pointed at the Chinese, the Romans, the French, the English and, of course, to the Scots as well for proliferating this obsessively frustrating yet exhilarating game.
No one is for sure when and where the game of golf started but the fact that it is one of the most popular recreational sports speaks volumes for its magical appeal. It is a game that you either love or hate…or both, at the same time. It is capable of giving you one of the ‘highest highs’ or ‘lowest lows’ but amazingly it can give you that one good shot to keep you coming back. How crazy is that??
Enough for the history and background of the game… Don’t let this diatribe fool you into thinking I am not crazy about the game of golf. It is a love affair that can begin at any age and last a lifetime. How many relationships can you say that about??
As always, thanks for visiting the ‘Ladies on the Tee‘ golf blog at www.sherrytabb.com. Stay tuned for the next edition of the Irreverent Golf Glossary.
