What, you might ask, do scoliosis and golf have in common?
Simple answer: Stacy Lewis and June is Scoliosis Awareness Month.
Stacy, an LPGA Tour player, has five titanium screws and a rod in her spine to straighten out the 45-degree curve caused by scoliosis. When first diagnosed with the curvature in her back at age 11, Stacy was relegated to wearing a back brace for 18 hours a day for 7 1/2 years. Unfortunately the brace did not not work and was faced with surgery and what she thought would be the end of her golfing days.
Fat chance this determined and gritty player was going to go quietly into the sunset. She fought her way back to become a NCAA Champion while playing for the University of Arkansas. She also found her way onto the LPGA Tour as a rookie in 2009 by winning the LPGA Qualifying Tournament. In 2010, she finished second behind Ai Miyazato at the Tres Marias Championship in Mexico. This diminutive player
(she stands at 5’5”) packs a wallop on and off the course. There should be good things coming for Stacy now that she is a 1-year veteran on tour
Recently it has been announced that Stacy will be the feature athlete on Athlete 360, the new sports medicine show that lets viewers get to meet their favorite athletes, inside and out – literally. This week, Stacy Lewis is that athlete. The show’s host is Jock-to-doc Mark Adickes, a former Super Bowl-winning lineman turned Harvard-educated orthopedic surgeon. Each week, Dr. Adickes interviews a different elite athlete to find the answers to the following questions:
What makes pro athletes?
What brings them down?
What gets them back in the game?
I encourage you to tune in and learn more about this amazing athlete, woman and golfer. I know I will…I was lucky enough to get her autograph and picture at the PGA Show last year and have loved following her career ever since.

Excellent story. I did not realize this about Stacy. Thanks for all the great blogs!
This is such an impressive story. I can’t believe she had to wear the brace for that long and it didn’t help at all.
I would be interested to know if Stacy had to customize her swing to compensate for lack of range of motion. I struggle with it every day and I have yet to find a swing that works for me.
Josh, that I don’t know. You could try contacting the LPGA Tour office and see if they can get an answer for you. Best of luck!
