First let me start by stating that I am in no way considered to be a book critic.  However, I know what holds my interest and what does not.  Having said that I recently had the opportunity to read, the James Ross book, Lifetime Loser. This book is the first in a series of 3 novels to date by Mr. Ross.

James Ross - AuthorLifetime loser

Lifetime Loser is a story about greed vs. honesty. Its backdrop is a golf course and there is a well woven plot that involves a naive golf professional, J.W. Schroeder and a very unscrupulous business man, Lew Zerrmann and his equally dishonest associates and acquaintances.  Ross takes us on a journey that spans two decades and has enough twists and turns to keep you hanging on every word.

For me this book was as interesting a read as a John Grisham or Patricia Cornwell novel (two of my personal favorites).  The character development was strong and effectual.  The proverbial fight of good vs. evil plays well in this book especially with the focus on greed.  It rings so true for today’s world.  It is not until the end that you really find out what will happen.  There are many surprises even at the end so don’t think you can figure out who wins.  You’ll need to read the book.

The bottom line is that I ended up putting off some office work to finish this book.  It is a real page turner, even if you are NOT a golf fan.  I am anxious to begin reading the second of the series, Finish Line. But for now, I have to get back to my office chores.  I may have to burn some ‘midnight oil’ tonight and get into the next story….

Recommendation: A hole-in-one!!

I have read two of the three books by James Ross and can’t tell you how much i enjoyed them. Being a golfer myself you can feel for all the characters in his book. The fact that it being on a golf course makes it even more enjoyable. Ladies get yourself a drink and sit down to two wonderful books. You won’t want to put them down.

Barb, I am halfway through his second book (Finish Line) and am finding it as much a page turner as his first. I think we should share with the men in our lives and not keep these gems secret.

I love reading books….such a big fan of them, that when I do not have a book in the house to read then I will re-read one that I have read already. Will need to get a copy of this one…it sounds very interesting. I love any books…my favorite is “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill Forwarded by Stuart Zadel, and “Millionaire Mindset” by Pat Mesti. Two fantastic Path To Prosperity books.
Thanks for adding another book to my collect:)

This sounds like a great series of books and an author I’ve heard about before. Ladies – yes it’s about time you did share it with the men!

Off to the shops with me then to check out James Ross!

Jon, I hope you enjoy them. Each one is uniquely different.

Nice post! Very articulate and well thought out. I will probably read this book based on your review. Maybe in the future, you can provide a little more in the review as to how long it took you to read, were there any negatives. But this is coming from someone who reads a lot and can’t stand the “back and inside cover” info that clearly is slanted to entice you to buy the book. I am always a sucker for it too. Guess it irritates me when I spend $30-50 on a book and am truly disappointed in author’s or their ghost writer’s story telling ability or lack thereof.

    Again nice post.

Jan, thanks for your kind comments and suggestions for future reviews. In response…I finished this book in a matter of a few hours. It has a great story line and enough intrigue to keep things moving, pull you into rooting for the underdog and make it hard to put the book down! No negatives from my point of view except that it ended! Enjoy!

Great review. It really does make me want to buy the book and read it.

  12. Sherry says:

I hope you do just that. I would like to know what you think about it. His other two books are worth reading as well, Finish Line and Tuey’s Course. This one is my favorite though!

  13. Donn Glenn says:

Okay now you need to read my book…It’s Caddyshack meets The DaVinci Code.

  14. Sherry says:

    Now THAT sounds interesting!

I agree great review I will definitely have to check this book out. I just finished a book that too you don’t have to be a huge golf fan to like. The book is called, Shooting an Albatross, by Steven R. Lundin. I liked it and I’m just learning more and more about golf. I’ve always loved it, but was never very good, until more practice I’m getting better anyway!
