Back in the 70′s, my brother and father were excellent golfers, but I wasn’t allowed to play – golf was for boys – figure skating was for girls. My parents were a little old fashioned. Anyway, I still loved watching it on TV and had a mild crush on Jack Nicklaus.

My father decided when I was in my 20′s that it was time for me to learn the game (he was desperate for someone to play with when my brother left our hometown). He tried to teach me the game, but he was a much better player than teacher and I gave up pretty quickly – it was a lot harder than it looked on TV.

20 years later I was an executive in a software company where free golf lessons were a perk offered to staff. My team forced me kicking and screaming to the first lesson. And no one was more shocked than I was when I fell in love with the game. Funny what good coaching can do for you.

My first couple of years playing were hit and miss. I didn’t really know that many people who played and I felt “naked on the first tee” when playing with strangers. Luckily, I persevered and ended up making some wonderful golf buddies on the golf course who are now friends for life.

Golf has changed my life. It has made me more confident meeting new people (hard to believe, but I’m quite shy ;) . It has opened up new networks to me for both business and friendship. It gives me something to talk about at those “oh so boring” cocktail parties we have to attend in business. It’s not only my favorite hobby in real life; it’s my favorite online hobby as well. I love to blog about golf and chat on golf forums, where I’ve made a lot of “virtual friends” that I hope to meet someday face to face.

Golf is something my husband and I share that makes us act like kids again; we are always looking for ways to run away together every weekend. We love to play together, travel and play together, watch golf on TV together, practice together, read the same golf magazines. Yup, we’re both hooked big time!

Golf is what I think about when I can’t sleep. I just lie there and imagine hitting every shot on one of my favorite courses and by about the 3rd hole, I’m fast asleep – sure beats counting sheep!

As I say on my blog, I took up golf for both pleasure and business. Now I wish that golf was my business!
